Ancient Ostia tour

The excavations of the ancient city of Ostia are one of the most interesting and beautiful sights near Rome. According to legend Ostia was founded by Ancus Marcius, fourth king of Rome, to guard the mouth (ostium, which literally means mouth) of the river Tiber. The port continued to flourish under the Empire despite the development of Portus, a new port slightly to the northwest, in the 2nd century AD. Ostia's decline began in the 4th century, when a reduction in trade was combined with the gradual silting up of the harbour. Be involved in discovering the ruins of Ancient Ostia, feeling what a Roman felt when the splendour of this amazing sight was throbbing and alive.

Tivoli Gardens and Hadrian's Villa

Tivoli, the Classical Tibur, is now a busy and lovely little town located fifteen miles on the east of Rome. In the centre are the famous gardens of the Villa d'Este and the park of Villa Gregoriana, and below the hill, protected by a beautiful park, are the magnificent ruins of Hadrian's Villa, one of the most important archeological sites in Italy. Tivoli was built in a delightful position on the lower slopes of the Sabine Hills at the end of the valley of the Aniene, the Classical Anio, which here narrows into a gorge and forms spectacular cascades. In Roman times its waters were carried to Rome by two acqueducts, the Anio Vetus begun in 273 BC, and the Anio Novus begun in AD 36.

Tour Duration: 4 or 6 hours, including travelling from/to central Rome.
